Section 3: Supplemental (Non-Vacancy Specific) Recruitment Activities Undertaken
by WCBL-AM/FM & WCCK.
WCBL (AM/FM) & WCCK have participated in several non-job vacancy menu options,
including:
· participation in a Job Fair at Marshall County High School…March 2006
· mentoring and working with Marshall County elementary and high school students interested in broadcasting…these sessions included helping with research projects, a senior project that involved “hands-on” participation (several students have participated in the program in the last three years, one of which was later hired as a part-time employee)
· to give local Marshall Co. High School students the experience of writing, recording and producing a regular radio feature, and then having that program broadcast during half-time of local football games, WCBL initiated the “Focus on MCHS” feature several years ago…this gives students valuable broadcast experience and knowledge of broadcast programs and a sample of radio production in the industry
· regular recordings of Marshall County elementary, middle school & high school students for a program called “Character Counts.” Gives students broadcast experience and is run on WCBL AM-FM & WCCK.
· on the regular mailing list of Murray State University’s publication of graduating seniors of the communications department (sponsorship of printed program of journalism and broadcasting students sponsored in part by Freeland Broadcasting (WCBL/WCCK).
· regular advertiser and participator in Murray State's Journalism & Mass Communications' High School Journalism & Broadcasting Workshop, held annually in February. (more than 200 high school students and their media advisors from nine schools representing three states participated)
· training and mentoring programs designed to help and encourage station personnel to learn the skills necessary for them to move into higher level positions...including available hands-on training programs for commercial production, local ballgame broadcasting, remote live broadcasts, copywriting and other instruction.
· attended a refresher course on EEO requirements…hosted by the Kentucky Broadcasters Association on March 8, 2006 at Miss Scarlett’s Restaurant in Grand Rivers, KY
· regular contributor to Star Bank at Marshall Co. High School, giving students hands-on experience with money…also broadcast experience thru student recorded public service announcements.
· WCBL/WCCK is a strong supporter of the Kentucky Sheriffs’ Boys & Girls Ranch in Gilbertsville, KY. Not only giving support to the effors of the ranch to help the young men & women at the rance but also opening our doors for any tours of the station.
· Upon his request, permitted Marshall Co. High School student Ryan Devine to sit in on a full morning show on WCCK, Calvert City. Session was held in August 2005 and featured training, hands-on experience and a discussion of job opportunities in the broadcasting field.
· WCBL/WCCK welcomes all youth groups for station tours, and generally we have five or more groups come thru the station(s) each year. This includes Cub Scouts, 4-H groups and others. The tour includes discussion of the various radio broadcast employment opportunities, as well as “how” radio works and hands-on experience in the radio production room.
· WCCK holds an annual fall picnic at Mike Miller Park in Draffenville, KY. (this past year, Oct. 1, 2005) Besides a day of food and fellowship, station personel discuss the radio business and the various job responsibilites. Listeners are invited to stop by the station at anytime for a tour and a more in-depth discussion of the inner workings of the radio station.
